Conscious Cheese Platter

November 21, 2017

When House of Citrine hosts events and has friends over, we never skimp on the essentials. We go all out with the cleanest, most nutrient dense products and foods so the people we love can all have an elegant night with the health benefits and without the guilt. Recently, we enjoyed a night with some of our favorite people mixed with some of our favorite companies. We were blessed to share love and laughter while sipping on homemade elixirs and tonics created with Revel Kombucha and Oregon’s Wild Harvest herbal tinctures. We focused on the most nutrient dense biodynamic wines and created stunning cheese platters with grain-free crackers, fresh seasonal organic fruits and salads, vegan chocolates and cheeses, sprouted and activated nuts and lots of love. This platter is great for the holidays or any get together with loved ones!

For those of you who are not familiar with biodynamic farming, it focuses on Rudolph Steiner’s principles that “strive to create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself” (Biodynamic Association, 17). Some of our favorite biodynamic wineries include:

  • Frey Vineyards

  • Benzinger Family Winery

  • DeLoach Vineyards (We adore the Boisset Collection)

20170613_1143.jpg
20170613_1150.jpg

We also chose grain-free crackers because grains have enzyme inhibitors that impair our digestion, causing inflammation. So, we like to stay away from grains whenever possible and lean towards nutritious options that pair nicely with various flavors. Some of our favorite grain-free crackers companies include:

  • Jilz Gluten Free Crackers

  • Lydia’s Foods

20170613_1175.jpg
20170613_1163.jpg

Vegan cheese was essential to our plates, as many of our guests choose to stay away from dairy. However, if you are looking to add milk-based cheeses to your own plates, we recommend using raw sheep or goat milk. Luckily, at our soiree, even the pickiest palate could not resist our vegan cheeses drizzled with local raw honey. Here is a list of our favorite companies:

  • Leaf Cuisine

  • Miyoko’s Kitchen

  • Kite Hill

  • Blönde Kuh

As for nuts, we choose to sprout them ourselves. We go to our local farmers market or health food stores and really focus on searching for not only organically and ethically grown nuts, but also choose nuts that actually emit love and positive energy. We scattered our plates with delicious almonds, cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, pecans, and Santa Barbara Pistachios. And of course, Phi Kind Chocolate and Hu Chocolate paired perfectly with our activated nuts of choice.

We were also blessed to have Erewhon Market donate a few light gorgeous seasonal salads of apple, fennel and greens. They were divine and refreshing. Our conscious cheese plates were truly next level with the fruits we added. Slicing obscure shapes and placing each fruit delicately to create palpable hues and tones of sweetness, we rounded off the night with vivid color and a middle eastern style. We used the works: figs, dates, apples, apricots, pears, red grapes, Sun Potion Mulberries, and Imlak’esh Organics Golden Berries .

Check out Jeff Sheirik’s (Rawtographer) photos of this magical night and we would like to thank all the incredible companies that donated to our event. So much love and gratitude resonates from the House of Citrine staff to our friends, family and readers.

Broth Bar

November 14, 2017

By: Molly Helfend

During one of our adventures to Portland, we had the delight to sit down and speak with co-owner and executive chef of Broth Bar, by Salt, Fire & Time, Tressa Yellig. Her calming presence instantly nourished our souls, just as her delicious broth and summer collagen coolers did as well! We spoke about Tressa’s creative and health insights, the healing benefits of bone broth, and how Salt, Fire & Time makes some of the highest quality bone broth in the world.

Please tell our readers what the Broth Bar is and where it began.

Broth bar is the retail leg of Salt, Fire & Time. It was Portland, Oregon’s first dedicated Bone Broth Café. My sister Katie joined the Company in April of 2015 and this was our first project together. Broth Bar opened its doors in August 2015.  The intention behind Broth Bar was to take the momentum around bone broth and use it to create an accessible user-friendly social experience that would help folks turn drinking bone broth into a routine of everyday wellness.

What makes Broth Bar unique?

Salt, Fire & Time has existed as a maker of old world artisan healing foods since 2009. We had been selling out of the kitchen for years, as well as hosting dinners, teaching classes and catering. Broth Bar by Salt, Fire & Time was a way of making all of this more mainstream that matched the public’s expectation of what an artisan food experience should be, while bringing everything under one very public roof.

Why choose Portland as Broth Bar’s home?

Portland has been a leader in innovative restaurant culture for at least a decade, but people are just beginning to understand how much innovation in food manufacturing also happens here.  As a chef, working in California, people talked about Portland as the promised land of food – year round grow season, no sales tax and very collaborative atmosphere of creators and entrepreneurs. I was sold. I moved here, sight unseen specifically to try to build a Community Supported Kitchen that I would name Salt, Fire & Time. The project evolved so many times that, at present, it is a full line of products with two retail outlets all focused around healing foods and education. The business atmosphere here in Portland is a great place to test new ideas.

What exactly is bone broth and why is it so good for us?

Bone Broth is a nutrient dense source of easy to absorb amino acids and minerals that normalizes stomach acid. The body doesn’t have to use any energy to digest it, so it can divert a lot of that energy to healing the intestinal lining and improving the way it breaks down and absorbs the nutrients in our food. I think of it as a thrifty food and healing decision, because it sets up the whole process beautifully for optimal efficiency.  It is also deeply soothing for the nervous system, great for muscle recovery and replenishing electrolytes and helps to improve joint mobility. Basically, it guarantees that the body is actually able to turn the food your eat into the medicine that it needs to function and heal.

How can we consume bone broth sustainably?

The most important things to focus on when making it or eating it are to 1) make sure the bones are coming from a source where the animals were allowed to live an authentic experience, eating and living the way that nature intended and 2) allow the process to happen at a low temperature for at least 8 hours. Don’t rush and be careful not to expose it to too much heat so that you can protect those delicate amino acids. I think the most sustainable way to do that is to develop a routine around your sourcing and cooking process. Make it part of your plan to know the farms that you are getting bones from and only make as much as you are planning to consume in a week or two. The larger the supply of bones you buy, usually the better the pricing that you will be able to negotiate. Having a freezer to store your bones in helps a lot, as well as being a place to store your finished product. It will keep for about 6 months in the freezer and is great to keep on hand for any of your cooking or nutrition needs.  It’s a good habit to get in to drinking about a 6-8oz cup per day first thing in the morning to maximize digestion . The effects will continue all day.  Otherwise, a cup in the afternoon is great for that late afternoon brain fog or many people enjoy a cup before bedtime to help quiet the mind and soothe the spirit from a day in one’s life! It’s sort of like nutritional first aid.

What is the most common question you get about consuming bone broth?

The most common question I get about bone broth is “which is the best animal to get bones from?” and interestingly the answer is whichever sounds most delicious to you. Truth be told, the nutrition panels on the broths are almost identical with nearly negligible micro variants between them. They are nutritionally the same and will have the same effect in the body. The biggest differences between them are the fat content and flavor.

Is there a vegan option?

At present we don’t have a vegan option – I fantasize about trying to build out the nutrient equivalent of bone broth in a vegetable form but it would be very comprehensive, expensive and difficult to make. Nonetheless, it is certainly on my short list for product development. I would not trust a product on the market today that claimed to be the same as bone broth.

How do you meld creativity, flavor and business together?

The easiest way for me to meld business, product development and flavor is with our company standard of high integrity in every department, also this is a lifestyle for me too. We will only grow this company without compromise to our ethics in sourcing and process. Being able to work with good farmers and good ingredients is inherently inspiring. Being close to our food and our customers is also inspiring. I get to see the consequences of my efforts directly influencing the lives of the people that we are serving on both ends of the business equation from the places we source ingredients to the people who’s lives are changed daily by the simple virtue of having access to quality food.  I honestly believe that this is the way that change is made, one delicious high integrity experience and decision at a time. I love this job and passion for it is easy to come by.

bone broth soup

What are some of the other menu items and products you chose to sell?

We also sell products from other vendors that match our commitment to quality and an intention to empower people to change their lives with high quality ingredients. At the end of the day, everything we do is in defense of quality foods – it’s the best way to effect future change at a community level and we hope that translates to a larger economy scale as well.

Every item that we choose to represent is cleanly sourced in its ingredients and is further supporting our customers to create a well-rounded healthy food experience at home. Whether it is supplements, snacks, condiments, drinks, or raw materials, I know the faces of the makers and that means a lot to this company.

Where do you see the future of the Broth Bar headed?

I see the future of Broth Bar much the way that Sally Fallon, the woman who pioneered this return to traditional foods, does – a Broth Bar in every town. Creating broader access to something so foundational is contagious and infinitely relevant to every community. We are slowly perfecting a model that others can use to make use of these products and processes in their areas.

If there was one message you would like our readers to take home from this, what would it be?

I want people to know that quality foods cannot be taken for granted and our access to food is an endangered privilege. Consumers have the most power to demand and secure access to these products in the marketplace by voting with their dollars. This not only protects producers like us, but also the farmers…and it takes so so many of them to make this work. This is one high integrity passionate response to protect the future of our food culture and the health of future generations and we need consumers to help us help them too.

jar.png
bottles.png

What inspires you?

I am inspired by beautiful ingredients and the intention to empower people to live better quality lives because of the food choices they make. Beauty is a basic need just as important as food itself. We seek it out to surround ourselves and create joy in our lives. Traditional Foods like Bone Broth are beautiful. Health is beautiful.  Humans are beautiful manifestations of this relationship to our environments. Food has the greatest ability to influence our health in any direction. It is the simplest most effective way to take charge of one’s life. There is enough suffering in the world and this is delicious medicine.

Health and Wellness are….

Health and Wellness are our birthright. Take advantage of reclaiming that fact, it is available to all of us, or at least we are trying to make it accessible to everyone so that they can. It begins with rebuilding the foundation of our bodies’  mechanism for changing food from our environment into healing nutrients and it can be especially pleasurable. This is a sensory environment. It informs our place on the planet and in community with one another. Food is foundational and bone broth even more so. It’s the definition of digestion.

City Guide : Montréal

November 7, 2017

Article by: Molly Helfend

Amidst the frigid tundra of Québec, a bohemian and historic metropolis lies on an island in the Saint Lawrence River. As you cross over the Pont Champlain Bridge, the quiet Canadian landscape is transformed into a vibrant and cultural hub for artists and business professionals alike. Montréal is ideal for those who want a European getaway without actually having to travel far and leave the comfort of North America. This effervescent atmosphere has a je ne sais quoi that makes this cosmopolitan city one of my favorite travel spots.

Montréal is an ethnically diverse city with a primarily French speaking society. However, I never seemed to have trouble finding English speakers amongst the city-dwellers. Montréal also happens to be one of the hippest cities in North America, boasting farm to table food, countless museums and galleries, and a thriving music scene, in which I got to see one of my favorite artists, Mac Demarco, play at the Metropolis Concert Hall. And for you nature buffs, Montréal hosts the second largest botanical garden in the world, with sprawling green spaces across the city as well. Although it is cold most of the year, the city comes alive during summer, with festivals, concerts and blooming viridescent nature abound. I loved the eclectic and cool Canadian way of life, while being able to navigate the city on foot and safely eating out without any digestive reactions. And as I meandered through the ancient cobblestone streets of Old Montreal and boogied my way through the eclectic nightlife scene of Mile End, I truly experienced a lively French provenance, melding old and new worlds together.

  • Play

I include five everyday: yoga, meditation, prayer, diet and sleep. Therapy is once a week. And I struggle the most with play, however, I know how essential it is and have recently added it on because I am not the best at it. I look for sustainability in my life because of my travel schedule. I am on the road 2/3 of the year, which means I am away from my foundation, my family and the structure that can keep one grounded. So for me to remain grounded, these non negotiables keep me sustained.

Yoga and Mediation

Every morning I wake up, drink tea and watch or read the news to find out what is happening in the world. This is very important to me, as someone who is actively involved in social justice. I never turn my back on the pain and suffering that exists, but I go towards it. Then, I go into my yoga room and meditate. I let myself be present to the suffering that exists in my prayer. I dedicate every practice to that challenge or issue that I saw or read, whether it is political, environmental or even personal, so that my practice is not about me. Even though I get the psychological and physiological benefits, but it is about the collective.

Diet

Every morning I wake up and drink a special tea of Fortune Delight Antioxidant Cinnamon with nut milk and a little agave. I am a vegan and very committed to my veganism because it is in direct alignment with my yoga practice. I do not want to introduce any energy into my body that has suffered or has been abused or terrorized in any capacity. This is because I take that energy in and it will influence the way I approach my day. Meat is not sustainable. As an environmental and animal rights activist, this is essential to my health.

Sleep

Sleep is something I do not need a lot of, as I am so busy and tend to not make it the biggest priority. Before I go to sleep, I take time and reflect on my day and recognize what I am carrying into the room with me. I am mindful of making sure I shower and wash my feet after teaching, so I am not taking any energy into the bed with me. I do try to rest as much as I can, but six hours is really what my body resonates on.

Therapy

Every week, I work with someone to help support me in my belief system and in my emotional process. I believe it is very important to have a guide to process and hold space with.

Play

For some reason, play is the most difficult for me, as I tend to not pencil it in. For me, it happens spontaneously, so I just don't schedule in that kind of joy time often. That kind of stuff can sometimes feel superfluous or secondary to me, but I am aware how essential it is and I am trying to actively add it more into my life. I am especially trying to see my girl friends more. They are raunchy and completely inappropriate, and I just laugh so hard when I am with them. I am now actively trying to schedule more time with them, even just lunch or a hike, as it is something I cherish. But, being with my family is the most important play to me.

Products

As for products I use, I do not wear any makeup. I think I have youthful skin because I am a vegan and stay away from processed foods. In addition, I only use vegan and cruelty free products. Right now, I am using AnnMarie Organics on my skin and on my hair, I use Abba. I use Doterra Oils everyday. I use oils a lot because I believe in the principles of them helping me stay grounded. I struggle with vertigo and oils help me relieve the dizzy spells or stop them when they are coming on. I put some on my head and feet and that can usually pull the energy out.

LITE+CYCLE : Essential Oil Fragrances

November 1, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

Kristie Head is the creator of LITE+CYCLE and is one passionate woman. We sat down with her and talked all things candles, essential oils and transparency. The creator of LITE+CYCLE is supremely passionate - bringing awareness about harsh chemicals and ingredients in our everyday products in our homes. We got the low down on candle making and how difficult it is to find a REAL non-toxic candle. Well the search is over…

What motivated you to start a non-toxic essential oil and clean candle Company?

I was motivated by the lack of availability for such a product and by the clean washing that goes on with the term “all natural”. Having worked in the fragrance and beauty industry for over 10 years, I became aware of the loose regulations on fragrance safety and the loopholes for natural marketing claims.* Frankly, it made me a bit angry, so I decided to create a product that was fiercely committed to ethics, clean standards, and transparency. It was a bit of a reaction product. One that, I believe still stands strong as the cleanest and most non-toxic candle available.

I often refer to LITE+CYCLE as a brand that advocates for clean, transparent and safer fragrances - and we do this by providing it, educating on it, and even sometimes challenging manufacturers to expand their capabilities.

*For example the claim “natural” can be used alongside unnatural ingredients as long as a certain percentage is adhered to - meaning sometimes it has synthetics and possibly harmful toxic ingredients. Additionally manufactures don’t legally have to disclose what is in a fragrance, as it is protected under trade secret (link here). So you might not know that you are inhaling chemicals such as formaldehyde or phthalates ( a common ingredient in fragrance that is linked to hormone disruption among other things).

You can visit LITE+CYCLE’s FAQ page for more information fragrances.

We are advocates of being able to nourish our body with clean ingredients. How did you pick and chose your scent palettes?

I chose my scent palette by staying true to the aim of having the least amount of interference possible from plant to candle. I first learned which oils are extracted with steam distillation and cold press, as oppose to those that can only be extracted using petroleum based solvents. By doing this I tried to eliminate any potential unnecessary contamination. My initial goal in creating LITE+CYCLE scents was to see how unadulterated I could get. How close to nature.

This was inspired by the farm to table and raw food movement as well as the rise in organic skincare. After all, what we breath into our lungs goes directly into our blood stream and affects our wellness too!

Once I had that down I kept it simple and, chose key essential oils that had complimenting aromatherapy benefits, VETIVER for grounding, BERGAMOT for boosting mood, LAVENDER for easing the mind, SAGE for clarity, and URBAN FOREST (our more complex blend) for elevating creativity.

LiteCycle_LauraAustin_056.jpeg

Do you have a morning ritual to awaken your senses?

My morning ritual is to awaken my senses slowly. I do this by lingering in bed for a bit, taking in the morning light, smiling at life’s surprises, and petting whatever or whomever is close to me - letting myself wake gently.

What is an ingredient you can't live without in the kitchen?

Olive oil preferably Italian organic and unfiltered!!

Tell us about your geometrical design on the candle lids. What does this mean to you?

My intention when creating the geometrical design on the lid was to exemplify my interpretation of unity and wholeness in a minimalist and chic way. To me it represents balance, connectedness, and the beauty and intelligence of the natural world.  The open negative space at the center of the design acts as a meditative point of focus — the calm, the light, the point of stillness amidst the flurry of life.

It can also be looked at as a personal mandala. Explained and westernized by Carl Jung in Memories, Dreams, Reflections :

“I sketched every morning in a notebook a small circular drawing, ...which seemed to correspond to my inner situation at the time. ... Only gradually did I discover what the mandala really is: ... the Self, the wholeness of the personality, which if all goes well is harmonious.”

What is a flower that you resonate with the most?

A dandelion, for its childlike nostalgia, cheerful unassuming beauty and intriguing blow balls. The blow balls, contain a perfect sphere of potential new life, which gets dispersed gracefully by an unexpected gust wind. That is something I aspire to, to pollinate new potential with a gust of wind.

LiteCycle_LauraAustin_337.jpg

How do you bring bliss into your home?

I bring bliss into my home with art, books, music and candle light. Art, on the walls keeps me inspired to create my own art, books (and lately puzzles) engage my mind. Music sets my emotions free and candle light makes me feel romantic - all of that is bliss!

In your opinion, how does bringing a high quality, clean essential oil blend candle benefit the energy is one’s home?

A high quality essential oil blend candle will help balance the moods in your home creating clearer more positive energy all around. It does this in two ways, 1)The essential oils that LITE+CYCLE uses are therapeutic grade which means they are genuinely healing and restorative. 2) The more we interact with nature the more peaceful we are, and smelling the real thing, can transcend you with just one sniff!

Where is your favorite place to light a candle (bathroom, kitchen, living room etc.)?

My favorite place to light a candle is in my living room at the base of my fireplace. I have an old cone fireplace that sits on a base of bricks. It has become an altar of sorts, a place where I burn sage, lay stones and sit to meditate. I light a candle here every night, even if just for a minute.

Which of your candles would you choose for your kitchen?

The Sage essential oil candle! Its scent goes well with food and it is crisp and clarifying.

Trump Update : May - September

October 30, 2017

Article by: Molly Helfend

It is easy to cite the amoral federal overreach and burdensome regulations that are occurring in the government right now. Many of us are transfixed by the political gargoyles and clickbait tactics being used to persuade, or almost silence, what our country truly wants or needs. The truth is that the cynic Trump administration is promoting the opposite of working together with positivity. With a sensationalist president talking with egotism and profane hyperbole, it's hard to not eschew from watching the news or trying to improve our communities. I completely understand why we are all afraid or angry right now. However, we all have the power to influence positive change, big or small. Love and hope still do exist and are very real.

As a follow up of my last article, “this is a brief overview to familiarize readers with environmental actions that are surrounding our government right now. This focuses on regulations, policies and events that have officially been proposed, passed and occurred. Every couple of months, I will update House of Citrine readers with information surrounding the government and the environment.”

Most importantly, I will actually provide real, accessible ways you can get involved and help our earth. Feel free to comment and share your ideas on more ways we can all help! Remember, politicians are ELECTED leaders and will follow what the public truly pushes for. Do not give up hope and keep praying and promoting peace, love and unity.

If you have not read my first article, here is another reference to update yourself on some of environmental rules that have been rolled back in Trump’s first 100 days. Also, be sure to check out your personal carbon footprint at carbotax.org and check out how you can get involved in carbon pricing at theclimatesolution.com.

WHAT: Trump appointed unqualified campaign workers instead of farm experts as staffers at the Department of Agriculture.

When: September 21

Why does this matter: Trump appointed a long-haul truck driver, country club cabana attendant and owner of a scented candle company that have no agriculture or policy experience to work in posts at the USDA. Some have even looked into the situation and claim that these hires do not even possess the required credentials to even hold a government salary level job. Most importantly, “an inexperienced staff can lead to mistakes and sidetrack a president’s agenda,” so it is obvious that Trump has appointed campaign staffers out of inappropriate loyalty (Hopkinson, 2017).

What can you do: Support your local community food system by buying local. Eat Local Grown is a great resource to learn more about the farms, farmers markets, restaurants, and grocery/co-ops around your area. Improve the agriculture system on a smaller community level.

WHAT: Hurricane Maria makes landfall in Puerto Rico.

When: September 20

Why does this matter: This category 4 hurricane completely destroyed the island and some are calling the damage apocalyptic. “The storm forced at least 15,000 people into shelters, destroyed structural and housing infrastructure, shut down electricity, disrupted the distribution of gasoline and medicine and limited food and water supplies” (Killelea, 2017). The White House was been way too slow to respond and efforts for a speedy recovery are looking bleak. This could not have come at a worse time, as Puerto Rico is in the throes of an economic crisis. Puerto Ricans are American citizens and we need to help, as they are on the brink of a full blown humanitarian crisis. Trump has claimed he will visit Puerto Rico and assess the damage in early October.

What can you do: Read more about charities on Charity Navigator and GuideStar to learn about individual charities and groups and learn how they will spend your donations. Right now, hold off on material donations and focus on donating to established charities that can properly provide relief. Check out donations to Unidos, by the Hispanic Federation, Unidos por Puerto Rico, All Hands Volunteers, Direct Relief and Center for Disaster Philanthropy. You can also donate to Donate to the American Red Cross via text by sending a text message saying "REDCROSS" to the number 90999.

WHAT: After Trump failed to offer condolences following Mexico’s earthquake and hurricane, Mexico rescinded their offer of aid to the United States.

When: September 12

Why does this matter: Last month, Mexico offered food, generators and medical aid to Texas post Harvey and Trump never responded to the offer. However, Texas governor Greg Abbott was very grateful and interested in accepting aid. Trump simply ignored Mexico’s generosity and failed to acknowledge the devastation they are going through as well. It is important to realize that “Mexico is a major U.S. trading partner and has for decades been a steadfast ally” and right now “negotiators from the U.S., Mexico and Canada are locked in a tense renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the landmark trade deal Trump has threatened to scrap if he does’t win major concessions from Mexico” (Linthicum, 2017). Mexico has stated that they need to redirect their funds and aid to their own citizens following the natural disaster destruction.

What can you do: Here is a list of charities you can donate to to help Mexico and here is a list of charities you can donate to to help Texas.

climate change

WHAT: The Senate Appropriations Committee passed a spending bill, approving $10 million to fund the United Nations’ climate change group that oversees the Paris Climate Agreement.

When: September 8

Why does this matter: Despite Trump’s decision to leave the Paris accord, our government still seems to mean business when it comes to environmental justice. The committee “approved a $51 billion spending bill for the State Department and foreign operations, which included an amendment to continue funding the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change as well as the scientific body the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change” (Volcovici, 2017). This shows the US is actually serious about fighting climate change and is willing to work together with other nations, despite the embarrassments of our president.

What can you do: This is a great step for the US. Keep the momentum going and volunteer with climate justice advocacy groups such as Climate Justice Alliance or WEDO.

WHAT: Hurricane Irma makes landfall in the Caribbean, putting Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Florida at risk.

When: September 5

Why does this matter: With surges of 185 mph winds, Irma is one of the strongest recorded hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. The storm made second landfall in Florida on September 10. This hurricane season has been one of the most devastating on record, wiping out entire islands, flooding cities and displacing thousands of people. Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and the Florida Keys were especially battered by the storms, with “six million customers in Florida, or about two-thirds of the state, [having] power outages” (Rivera and Alvarez, 2017). Luckily, there was less flooding and intense rains than expected in rest of Florida.

What can you do: Donate to the proper organizations for hurricane relief.

WHAT: Trump chose Oklahoma Congressman and “human induced climate change” denier Jim Bridenstine to head NASA.

When: September 4

Why does this matter: Although he first needs to be confirmed by the Senate, already two senators from Florida’s Space Coast have publicly opposed this choice. Bridenstine is a conservative Republican official who is a “a veteran Navy combat pilot who served during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and who currently serves in the Oklahoma Air National Guard,” however, does not believe humans are involved in rising global temperatures (Greenfieldboyce, 2017). This is very alarming to scientists, as NASA conducts large amounts of global climate science research. He also does not believe that the US has a large enough carbon footprint to make an impact on the earth, when in fact, the US is one of the largest polluting countries on earth.

What can you do: Push for NASA to continue their science research. Write letters and keep yourself involved in their activities. Partnered with NASA, iSeeChange is a community weather and climate journal for participants nationwide that uniquely combine citizen observations (photos and text) with, cutting-edge weather and satellite data.

WHAT: The EPA has not visited 13 of the 41 Superfund sites in Texas since the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

When: September 3

Why does this matter: The Associated Press has recently reported that these Superfund sites were severely flooded, with heavy concentrations of hazardous waste flowing and running the risk of contaminating the entire cities and towns. “Long a center of the nation’s petrochemical industry, the Houston metro area has more than a dozen Superfund sites, designated by the Environmental Protection Agency as being among America’s most intensely contaminated places” and with the expensive hurricane damage, waters should not have additional pollutants from dangerous sediment (Dearen and Biesecker, 2017).The EPA claimed that the report was misleading, however, they never actually disputed the claims.

What can you do: Contact the EPA and report the need for better Superfund testing. Check out this great list of companies you can personally contact to help clean up hazardous and toxic waste.

WHAT: Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the central coast of Texas near Corpus Christi.

When: August 25

Why does this matter: With wind speeds of nearly 130 mph, this Category 4 hurricane is the first major hurricane to hit the United States in nearly 12 years. The damage from Harvey was absolutely devastating, causing “catastrophic flooding from the storm surge and torrential rains…[as well as] downed walls and power lines, roofless businesses and unanchored mobile homes, [with] electricity…unavailable for weeks” in Houston and nearby towns and cities (Fernandez and Blinder, 2017). Tens of thousands of residents have lost their homes, seeking refuge in shelters, with upwards of 70 casualties as well. This is one of the worst natural disasters to hit the United States since Hurricane Katrina, Sandy or Irene.

What can you do: Check out this great article by Rolling Stone about how to get involved.

climate change and trump

WHAT: The Trump Administration dissolved the National Climate Assessment panel.

When: August 21

Why does this matter: This 15 person federal advisory committee helped both public and private-sector officials examine scientific climate data and properly utilize it in long term policy. Most importantly, this group has been writing the 2018 Climate Science Special Report, which “was produced by scientists from 13 different federal agencies and estimates that human activities were responsible for an increase in global temperatures of 1.1 to 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit from 1951 to 2010” (Eilperin, 2017). Many state and local governments have been pushing for federal guidance on how to approach climate change issues, such as sea level rise and shifts in economic feasibility, in their cities and towns.

What can you do: In relation to the economic burdens of climate change, this is a great site to look up mutual funds, see their exposure to various fossil fuel companies and carbon footprint your own funds: fossilfreefunds.org.

WHAT: Trump revoked Obama’s Federal Flood Risk Management standard, a coastal flood protection rule.

When: August 16

Why does this matter: With Republican congressman from Florida condemning the decision, Trump “rescinded a rule that requires federal, state and local agencies to account for rising sea levels caused by climate change and to construct buildings, highways and other infrastructure to withstand flooding” (D’Angelo, 2017). This rule reduced the risk and cost of flood disasters, which coastal states like Florida, are seeing increasing need for. Trump keeps boasting about his plans to improve the economic status of the US, however, this move will cost taxpayers billions of dollars in infrastructure and relocation fees.

What can you do: Be an active part of the community, go to your local and state governments and push for zoning ordinances and building code standards.

WHAT: The Natural Resources Conservation Service will now censor the use of the words “climate change” to use the phrase “weather extremes” instead.

When: August 8

Why does this matter: The NRCS is a branch of the USDA that oversees farmers’ land conservation. In a series of emails, the Trump administration is using prerogative language to gradually percolate the government from acknowledging the existence of climate change. Staff are asked to replace such phrases as “‘climate change adaption’… [with] ‘resilience to weather extremes’…and the the term ‘reduce greenhouse gases’ [is] blacklisted in favor of ‘build soil organic matter, increase nutrient use efficiency.’ Meanwhile, ‘sequester carbon’ is ruled out and replaced by ‘build soil organic matter’ (Milman, 2017).

What can you do: Keep using the proper language and make it the norm. Start conversations and be active in educating those around you. Here is a link to help properly converse with climate skeptics. If you have the means, consider donating to environmental and climate organizations such as Earth Justice, the Sierra Club, the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund, or NextGen Climate Action.

WHAT: The US formally notified the United Nations that it will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.

When: August 4

Why does this matter: Even though the administration says they are “open to negotiation” and do intend of participating in the United Nations climate negotiations in November, which aim to hash out details of the Paris agreement, the administration continues to embarrass our country. According to the AP-NORC poll, “sixty-four percent of Americans disapprove and just 34 percent approve of how Trump is handling the issue of climate change” (Biesecker and Swanson, 2017). Luckily under the terms of the agreement, the US cannot officially withdraw until after the next presidential election.

What can you do: Vote in 2020 election. Make sure to vote for politicians you truly believe will make positive change for our country.

WHAT: A federal court blocked the EPA’s effort to suspend an Obama-era methane restriction rule.

When: July 3

Why does this matter: Methane is one of the most potent and toxic greenhouse gases in the world, making its regulation extremely vital. This legal blow will make sure the EPA continues to comply with the existing regulatory rule to limit methane emissions and smog-forming pollutants emitted by new and existing oil and gas wells. The Trump administration has continuously been working to roll back multiple environmental and public health sanctions, signaling their interest in economic prosperity over any other. The administration has been working to “undo regulations it inherited, including a rule on grizzly bear protection,…another on chemical spills,…[ also challenging] a May E.P.A. decision to suspend for 90 days a rule aimed at cutting methane emissions from landfills…[and have tried suspending] a Food and Drug Administration rule requiring restaurants to list the calories in the food they sell and a Labor Department regulation mandating that financial advisers put consumers’ best interests ahead of their own (Friedman, 2017).

What can you do: This is a positive step in methane regulation. Try to decrease your fossil fuel production through public transportation, carpool, biking or walking as much as possible. Also, check out car sharing options. Eat less beef and palm oil, which are huge contributors to deforestation. Forests naturally absorb methane. Decrease your waste production by buying bulk, whole foods and produce and investing in sustainable food storage such as Bees Wrap, Stasher Bag, Mason Jars and reusable water bottles.

WHAT: Scott Pruitt announced he is launching an initiative to critique climate science at the EPA.

When: June 30

Why does this matter: This government program would challenge climate science using “back and forth” military style tactics, attacking systematic and organized data that currently exists. This is also a very intense tactic that some people may not respond positively to, as “climate scientists express concern that the "red team, blue team" concept could politicize scientific research and disproportionately elevate the views of a relatively small number of experts who disagree with mainstream scientists (Waldman, 2017). Although Scott Pruitt has admitted to the existence of climate change and human’s role in this, he is still skeptical that greenhouse gases are the primary cause.

What can you do: “Get involved with peaceful protest marches in your area. They are mostly spread by word of mouth or social media, but it is helpful to check your local newspapers and bulletin boards” (Helfend, 2017). If not, start one yourself with your friends! Start a club on your school campus and get your school involved.

WHAT: The Energy Department closed down the Office of International Climate and Technology, which works with other countries to develop clean energy technology and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

When: June 15

Why does this matter: Without this office, working directly with other nations on issues regarding clean energy will be much harder. It “played a lead role preparing for the annual Clean Energy Ministerial…[and helped] India develop its own lighting efficiency standards and start a program to purchase LED lamps in bulk for consumers” (Plumer, 2017). Environmental cooperation with the US government is becoming increasingly more difficult and other countries are starting to become fed up, leading to hostile diplomacy.

What can you do: Invest in renewables. Install solar panels, switch to biofuel or if you have the means, invest in companies like Tesla that are working towards zero emissions. “Save on gas with an electric, hybrid, or super fuel-efficient car. (Check out this electric car calculator from the Union of Concerned Scientists, which helps you take into account the electricity source where you live).” Work towards energy efficiency in your home through this checklist. Speaking of technology, this is actually a fantastic tool in the battle for climate justice. There are many ways technology is actually finding solutions and bringing so many people together.

environmental sustainability

WHAT: A federal judge declared that the environmental survey done on the Dakota Access Pipeline was not adequate.

When: June 14

Why does this matter: This is a huge win for pipeline activists, as it proves that the government did not adequately consider the directly negative impacts of an imminent oil spill and how to pipeline itself would disrupt sacred lands. “The judge said the army must redo its environmental analysis in certain sections and he would consider later whether the pipeline must halt operations in the meantime” (Associated Press, 2017). This gives activists time and proper leverage to keep fighting for the environmental justice of the land.

What can you do: “‘Divestment from big banks that have financial stakes is often a difficult, but an important step that can be taken to essentially show where you want your money to go. Taking your money out of banks and putting it into credit unions has been an essential part of the movement to separate banks from offshore drilling. Read more here.' (Malik). Stop using Bank of America, HSBC, UBS, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase” (Helfend, 2017).

WHAT: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration canceled proposed limits on the number of endangered whales, dolphins and sea turtles trapped in sword-fishing nets on the West Coast.

When: June 12

Why does this matter: This is simply immoral. This is one of the first legislations that would target protections for threatened animal species by the Trump Administration. The NOAA claims that the fishing industry has implemented measures to reduce marine injuries and deaths in recent years and that the costs of the protections outweigh the benefits. However, they are only looking at the economic and human side of this perspective. “Endangered fin, humpback, and sperm whales; short-finned pilot whales and common bottlenose dolphins; as well as endangered leatherback sea turtles, loggerhead sea turtles, olive ridley sea turtles and green sea turtles” are all on the list of animals directly affected by the fishing industry and need proper protection in order to survive” (Weikel, 2017).

What can you do: “‘Start with a google search on: “how to choose ethical seafood”. The first three links that show up are: seafoodwatch.org, NRDC.org, and goodfishguide.org. Educating yourself is without a doubt the most important first step anyone can take when it comes to environmental health’ (Malik). Watch what you put in your shopping cart and try to avoid buying unsustainable fish, or opt for none at all” (Helfend, 2017). Here is another great link with Greenpeace. Donate to organizations that work together to protect marine life like MarineBio.

WHAT: Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke suggested shrinking Bears Ears National Monument

When: June 12

Why does this matter: This monument in southeastern Utah is a stunning 1.3-million-acre canyon red rock conservation area that is home to around 100,000 archaeological sites. “The Bears Ears designation was supported by environmentalists and the leaders of many native tribes in the region, including the Navajo Nation, but was opposed by Utah’s governor [and] the state’s congressional delegation,” proving this land also has historical and spiritual significance (Turkewitz and Davenport, 2017). Under The Antiquities Act, which gives presidents the authority to protect designated areas as public monuments, no president has ever eliminated or reduced the size of a monument, so this would be a historic move.

What can you do: Visit and donate to your park system. “Support your community parks and public lands by attending consistently and treating them with respect. Although this may seem counterintuitive for environmental reasons, the more you visit parks and public lands, the more money is poured in. The government cannot avoid seeing this increase in tourism and support” (Helfend, 2017).

WHAT: Hawaii becomes the first state to enact a legislative law that documents rising sea levels and implements parts of the Paris Climate Agreement.

When: June 8

Why does this matter: The state of Hawaii continues to put environmental stewardship as a priority. Tropical islands “are seeing the impacts of climate change first-hand…[as] tides are getting higher, biodiversity is shrinking, coral is bleaching and coastlines are eroding” (Associated Press, 2017). In addition, as climate changes, natural disasters will devastate the islands as time goes on. Hawaii is setting strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and we must do the same in order to preserve not only the islands, but also the American landscape itself.

What can you do: I think also identifying that climate change needs to be fought with methods beyond just science is important. Through art like photography we can leverage people to understand the ramifications of losing such beautiful lands such as Hawaii. Here is a great article about utilizing art for climate justice.

Here are some great links to read up about other creative solutions to environmental justice issues:

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/24/opinion/can-poets-save-the-parks.html?_r=0

WHAT: The Department of the Interior is going to review protection of the rare sage grouse.

When: June 8

Why does this matter: Nearly two years ago, the Obama administration helped this rare western bird receive proper collaborative conservation and protection. Both “Republican and Democratic governors expressed support…[as did] many ranchers and environmental groups…[and] while not everyone declared the plan perfect, it went a long way toward easing years of tension over a divisive issue that combined politics, energy development, land use, wildlife conservation and climate change (Yardly, 2017). If the new administration decides to withdraw protection, it would thwart the sage grouses’ potential of security under the Endangered Species Act. The sage grouse is a unique animal that is critically vital to the western US landscape, as protecting these rare birds helps other wildlife that share their habitat, including elk, pronghorn and songbirds.

What can you do: To help protect the sage grouse yourself, remove invasive plants to protect their habitat, mark fences, prevent wildfires, establish conservation easements so private landowners can be reimbursed for permanently protecting land from development and push for no-drill buffer zones to prevent drilling on grouse habitat.

WHAT: Washington, California and New York formed the United States Climate Alliance, an alliance that states will use as a way to coordinate with climate change issues.

When: June 1

Why does this matter: These three states represent a fifth of the US economy and also produced 11 percent of U.S. emissions in 2014, according to the Energy Information Administration. This coalition of leaders are influencing many other states and groups of people to join to take action and pledge to meet the US’ greenhouse gas emission target including 80 mayors “including Los Angeles, Atlanta and Salt Lake City…along with Pittsburgh,” three governors, more than 100 businesses and even “eighty-two presidents and chancellors of universities including Emory & Henry College, Brandeis and Wesleyan are also participating” (Tabuchi and Fountain, 2017). Even Former New York City mayor and billionaire, Michael Bloomberg, pledged $15 million to support operations and foot the US for pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement. This proves that the majority of the US wants to positively contribute and work together against climate change, no matter what the negative and transgressive agenda of the government has. Liberal or conservative, people are banding together to acknowledge that climate change is real and that this is an important crisis that must be taken seriously.

What can you do: Make sure your local government gets involved. Write letters, make calls, schedule appointments and let your representatives know that this matter is important to you. Start implementing environmental standards in your own town such as implementing recycling or composting bins or reducing plastic bags. Plan town activity days around environmental justice such as trash clean up, no cars for a day, or farmers markets. Get creative! Check out this site to familiarize yourself and get your city involved.

WHAT: Trump announced that the US will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord

When: June 1

Why does this matter: This move is more than irresponsible, it is frankly embarrassing to the United States, as we would account for 21% of the total emissions reduced by the accord through 2030. Instead, we are prioritizing the hope of false economic precedences over the health of the global environment. Trump claims that the accord stymies economic growth, however, it actually opens doors to the possibility for jobs within the green energy field. Instead we are “weakening efforts to combat global warming and embracing isolationist voices in [the] White House who argued that the agreement was a pernicious threat to the economy and American sovereignty” (Shear, 2017). Frankly, this move shocked the world, eliciting an uproar of opposition from corporate, activist and nation leaders across the world, such as Elon Musk, who in response, quit Trump’s advisory council. In addition, Al Gore stated that this move is a “reckless and indefensible action…as it undermines America’s standing in the world and threatens to damage humanity’s ability to solve the climate crisis in time.” The agreement is nothing more than a positive step forward for the world to battle climate change as one community, instead, Trump is isolating the United States from our allies. He even claims that he wants to renegotiate the terms of the Paris deal, however, Germany, France and Italy have very clearly stated that contours of the agreement cannot be changed and should be taken very seriously for the future vitality of our planet. To make matters more startling, Trump’s decision actually negates what a majority of American’s feel towards the agreement. According to Yale Climate Change Communication, 69% of all voters support the US’ involvement in the Paris Climate Agreement and want Trump to remain within the accord. Ironically, “Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement could accelerate damage to his family’s real estate empire in the coming decades, especially his properties that lie just feet from the encroaching sea in low-lying South Florida,” so you are allowed to have a chuckle of over that feat (Dearen and Sanz, 2017).

What can you do: which will take about four years to complete, leaving a final decision up to American voters in the 2020 election.

WHAT: The Dakota Access pipeline had its first official leak.

When: May 15

Why does this matter: Before officially operational, the pipeline already spilled 84 gallons of crude oil at a South Dakota station. Mass protests from people across the globe, especially from outraged indigenous groups, have been warning about the inevitable leak and threats to the environment. This oil not only costs millions of dollars to clean, it disrupts the stability and integrity of the sacred land. At the end of the four year term, the Obama Administration denied a key permit to the project, however, Trump is directly connected to the company involved and has expedited this hazardous pipeline’s construction. Read more here.

WHAT: The EPA allowed mining company, Pebble Limited Partnership, to pursue federal permits to create a massive gold and copper mine at Bristol Bay, the headwaters of one of Alaska’s pristine salmon fisheries.

When: May 12

Why does this matter: With large copper and gold deposits in southwest Alaska, mining companies have been pressuring the government to overturn environmental regulations for years. However, mining will not only pollute the surrounding water and fish populations, it will also adversely affect the health and economy of the indigenous and Alaskan Natives in the region. The Trump administration is giving “a go-ahead to industry to challenge EPA actions or to seek permits about which they previously might have been uncertain” (Bohrer, 2017).

What can you do: Buy and support sustainable brands such as Brilliant Earth for your jewelry needs. Read up more about the sustainable process of bioleaching here.

WHAT: Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, signed the Fairbanks Declaration, an international declaration that acknowledges the existence and threat of climate change towards the Arctic region.

When: May 11

Why does this matter: This huge step is in direct opposition with the Trump Administration’s trivial and skeptical views of climate change. It indicates the urgent and critical need to globally work together to stop climate justice issues. This declaration was signed at a meeting with the Arctic Council, “a forum made up of indigenous groups and eight countries with territory bordering the Arctic Circle” (Greenwood, 2017).

What can you do: Greenpeace lists some great ways you can get involved with arctic drilling campaign issues.

WHAT: A methane emissions repeal measure failed to pass the Senate.

When: May 10

Why does this matter: The new rule would have given energy corporations amnesty for their pollution from methane emissions on federal land. Keeping the Obama administration’s old rule, which “requires oil and gas companies to plug accidental leaks of methane…and scale back the practice of intentionally venting or burning gas as they extract more profitable crude oil” is vital in keeping oil and gas companies in check with environmental hazards (Dlouhy, 2017). Regulating methane is a very important step towards battling climate change, as the Trump administration has clearly prioritized fossil fuel interests over environmental protection. Fossil fuel production and intensive livestock farming are responsible for 60% of all human methane emissions with landfills and waste contributing 16%, biomass burning contributing 11%, rice agriculture 9%, and biofuels 4%.

WHAT: The EPA dismissed half of its scientific advisers on the major review board.

When: May 7

Why does this matter: An unexpected red flag, this move signals a shift from academic to business and industry minded individuals running the EPA. The EPA provides guidance on whether research has sufficient rigor and integrity. Scott Pruitt is replacing scientists with the very industry critics that are being scrutinized by the EPA for their pollution efforts. This allows them to control all aspects of their carbon footprint, not caring about its effects on human health and the environment. Trump has even called for the EPA to have a “40 percent reduction for its main scientific branch” and rolling “back major Obama-era regulations on climate change and clean water protection” (Davenport, 2017).

What can you do: “Educate yourself with science-based literature or documentaries. Try to be careful when reading on the internet, as much of the information can be slanted to either side. Taking a science course at your local college or online is another great way to get more informed” (Helfend, 2017).

WHAT: The US Department of Agriculture is easing school lunch regulations implemented by the Obama Administration.

When: May 1

Why does this matter: Although not perfect, the 2010 law, implemented by Michelle Obama, required students to be offered “fruits and vegetables every day, have whole grain-rich foods, fat-free or low-fat milk, and have meals with reduced sugars and sodium” (Khan and Ebbs, 2017). Agriculture secretary, Scott Perdue, decided to halt sodium and whole-grain requirements, as well as, allow 1 percent fat flavored milk back into the National School Lunch Program. Many more conservative groups have complained and lobbied about restrictive nutritional lunch programs and the governments need to intervene, however, obesity is a large epidemic in America. With food and agriculture corporations continuously ignoring nutritional health standards, Michelle Obama’s actions were a step in the right direction to introducing children to a whole food, healthy diet.

What can you do: Pack your own lunches for your children. Teach about nutrition and real whole foods directly from the home. What the Health Meal Planners can help with affordable meal planning and kid friendly recipes. Also consider time saving meal box subscriptions such as Urthbox, One Potato or HelloFresh.

Muneeza Medical Intuitive

Muneeza Ahmed : Medical Intuitive

October 24, 2017

It is a true honor to interview this astounding world-renowned healer. Being in her presence is profound. Known as the “Modern Medicine Woman,” Muneeza Ahmed has the gift of true insight and intuition when it comes to healing her patients. Muneeza was blessed to be mentored by Anthony William, Medical Medium, and is a trusted reference for Anthony’s clients. She uses energy healing to clear subconscious blocks and singlehandedly changes lives and rectifies imbalances of the mind, body and soul across the globe. Please refer to her website for information regarding appointments for medical and intuitive readings, emotional wellness healing sessions, online courses and programs, and more. Muneeza is one of the most remarkable healers we have ever met - you do not want to miss a word!

How did you get started into your healing work?

I got started like many people do, because I was sick myself since I was a baby. And around the age of 28/29 a friend handed me a book that talked about reducing inflammation and I took it to heart, read it in one day, and started the diet the next day. I cut out sugar, dairy, grains, meat and eggs overnight and started to heal. I had such a huge improvement, that I fell deeply in love with the power of just food to heal the body. I got off drugs that I had been on for 30 years in just 2 weeks. To me that was a miracle.

I had breathing issues my whole life and on top of that -  multiple mystery illnesses, chronic fatigue syndrome, thyroiditis, asthma, multiple chemical sensitivities, allergies, eczema, multiple respiratory illnesses and chronic sinusitis and colds. I was born and got sick at 3 months old. I developed a chronic bronchitis and my mother would sit inside my crib to help me get steam to loosen my mucous so I could breathe at night. Now that I have babies, I realise just how scary that must have been for her. So I vowed that I would do everything to prevent this with my kids. I delved deep into learning anything and everything about health so I could help my family.

Who or what has influenced your current knowledge base?

My own experiences and those of my clients, but most profoundly, Medical Medium® Anthony William, and all those I followed in the Raw Food Movement, like Dr. Gabriel Cousens and David Wolfe who got me started on the fact that raw foods were super healing. But by far THE biggest influence has been Anthony. The information that comes from the Spirit of Compassion is TRUTH in capital letters, because I have witnessed so many people healing, coming off medications and supplements as they feel better and chronic symptoms they have lived with for most of their lives disappear. These are daily miracles that I get to witness that I am so grateful for. Of course, not everyone’s journey is straight forward nor is it easy. But even through the hardship of healing, people hang on because deep down they know that it can help them truly heal in the deepest way.

What is a common trend you’re noticing that most people are deficient in?

B12, magnesium, zinc, greens, fruit & hydration  - of course the Medical Medium tells us exactly according to Spirit what the most common deficiencies are. It must be truth because when people start to supplement with these nutrients, they start to feel better even without a specific viral or healing protocol. Of course Spirit also recommends the most efficient and effective brands which are listed on the Medical Medium Preferred Supplements page.

What is blocking people from healing?

Knowledge.

The knowledge of the truth that Anthony William, Medical Medium® provides is so profound and yet simple.

So many people have studied so many modalities and those who embark on a healing path are not short of will. It has nothing to do with a person’s will. Everyone wants to heal and be healthy and vibrant.

Where they get blocked is when they do not have the truth of the cause of their illness. Just knowing that is enough to get the process started in a really profound way. This is what Medical Medium has provided to the world. The reason people lose will is because they end up not feeling better. But usually that is because they do not know the Truth.

And then he shares about all the healing protocols, what gets metals out, what truly heals the gut, what removes radiation, pesticides, chlorine, etc. His work is full of TRUTH and wisdom. I have not seen as many people making profound changes in their health as I have with his information.

How do you protect yourself during your sessions so you don’t take on other people’s energy? What do you do? Any cleansing rituals?

I always start with a clear intention - not just for my sessions, but it is how I live my life. I live it with the intention that no one enter my field without my permission and no one is allowed to breach boundaries. Then energetically I take this into my work. It works the same real humans as with those in the spirit realm. Speak the same way and just be really clear. Clear intention is the first thing (plus I have done years of work establishing boundaries, I did not even know what they were, growing up). Then I say a prayer to God and I call in the Angels for help. I ask for my field to be kept clear to serve others to my highest potential as possible.

I start the morning by lighting candles, and diffusers in every room. And then I pray.
And then I start. At the end of the day I say a prayer of gratitude.

How do you nourish your body? (Food, supplement, self-care rituals)?

Oh it has changed so much over the years. Now, what I eat is very Medical Medium® based:  Lemon water, celery juice, HM detox smoothie, mostly raw and low fat. And lots and lots of fruit. I am kinda crazy about good fruit. I will go to great lengths to source delicious fruit. I have been raw for a long time and vegan mostly of the last 10 years of my life. However, a lot of people think that because Anthony is just sharing about fruits and vegetables, that its nothing new. However, he is the one who told us about the power of celery juice alone, wild blueberries, and that there are 56 blends of adrenaline in the body, 36 for most every day activities and 20 or so for special events in our lives, like childbirth. He also shared that there are over 7 blends of hydrochloric acid in the gut, not just one kind like medical science believes. And he taught us about the fact that decaying (fermented) foods are not great for the body, secret sources of MSG like natural flavors and nutritional yeast, and that elevated biotics are the way to go. I mean his books are LOADED with information and with so much detail that every time I read them I learn something new. I cannot wait for the release of his new Thyroid healing book.

I don’t like to share my supplements because people think they should do the same as I do. Plus it's health information and it's private. We are each so unique and different, that it’s not really helpful to share those protocols.

Self care rituals, I take a lot of baths, I listen to and play my favourite music (I am a pianist) and I love to dance. I love to hang out with friends and I love to make good food. This is on top of focusing on essential oils, homeopathy, and my emotional needs.

What are your top favorites supplements your have in your holistic medicine cabinet?

They are the most important ones recommended by Medical Medium. And include Zinc, B12, Liposomal C, lysine, wheatgrass, barley grass, spirulina, Magnesium - these are probably my favourites.

What does a session with you typically look like?

I offer two types of sessions.

Medical Intuitive Reading:

A typical session with me starts with me tuning in with the client before the session begins on the phone. I go into meditation for my clients, everyone I am going to work with that day. I start tuning in and asking for support and help with every case and information starts to come through. Then when I get on the phone to them, it is a continuation of that session.

I first go through all symptoms and conditions, and a little bit of history. I read the body intuitively and then I work out what they need most to heal. And we devise a protocol plan for them. They have the opportunity to ask me questions at the end.

With the Emotional Wellness Session:

I ask clients to share their top 5 struggles (emotional, mental, physical). And based on what they share the session is a combination of coaching on the issue, whether it's a financial purpose, relationship or health related etc., and a clearing of the energies that are underlying the creation of the issue or that are underlying because of the experience of the issue. I most often use Emotion and Body Code techniques to help with clearing and sometimes Angel clearing as well. I have the ability to tap into the Akashic Records and that also helps immensely in these sessions. Often clients walk away feeling a shift with the issue and have things to work on at home that help integrate the energies. I have been able to help people overcome fears, body image issues and clear emotional charge on just about any area of their lives.

What are your top 5 health recommendations for people who may not have the opportunity to work with you?

  • Give up the foods that feed viruses - no dairy, eggs, sugar, gluten, soy, corn & canola - don’t play with this recommendation - take it to heart and actually DO it.
  • Figure out what stops you from implementing what you want to do and achieve. I find this is the single most biggest factor in the way of people doing what they need to.
  • Bring in SOME raw and fresh food into your diet - it helps you hydrate and starts to detoxify you. At least for 2 meals a day eat raw food and eat your last meal of the day cooked.
  • Drink celery juice daily, if  you did not already get that from Medical Medium’s message - it is critical and life saving.
  • Eat every 90 minutes. You will heal and save your adrenals from crashing.
  • Eat Wild Blueberries every single day. This is the food that Spirit says is the best for humans. And Eggs are the worst. They feed every pathogen.

What is your go-to juice or fruit concoction?

Watermelon.
Cucumber.

Separately or both together. I can LIVE on them.

What are your favorite self-care rituals?

My favourite self care rituals are my daily bath, face massage, SLEEP, full body massage and other body work as needed. Plus I love annointing with my favourite oils - people ask me if I am wearing perfume, but often it is just essential oils.

Mind: Mental pursuits, books you’re reading, any kind of mind training, meditation, etc., your rituals of mind).

I am currently reading about the goddess Archetypes in the book - The Goddess Guide. I am also reading more about the Essenes right now. My daily mind training is with my kids. How to direct, how to not be triggered, how to respond calmly in spite of a trigger, how to increase the level of COMPASSION I feel.  This is my daily practice. Oh and the other place I have to go the extra mile on compassion is on social media. Wow are there a lot of non-compassionate comments out there. I believe my mind rituals need to be consistently practiced in life with real humans. Daily.

With Real problems: It’s not as much mind training, but heart training. People come from everywhere, all backgrounds. They have had to wait for appointments, so if an appointment gets rescheduled, or someone gets offended on social media or someone is not getting better, or it’s too expensive, they ask me what to do and how to help them. It's dealing with people’s emotions all day long. This is my mental, emotional and spiritual training ground. It has taught me so much. Anthony and the Spirit of Compassion have helped me understand compassion more deeply. I am so indebted to him for this wisdom. It is the single most powerful thing I have learned from him.

But more than that, my suffering has taught me the most .The lessons in humility and compassion from your own suffering cannot be beaten, if you choose to learn them.

What are some of your favorite natural wellness products?

Oh wow. I love Nadine Artemis from Living Libations. And I love ALL her products. My favourites are her best skin ever, the Rose CoQ10 serum, I love all her teeth products, I love her shampoos SOOOO much. My hair looks like I walked out of a salon after I shampoo with her True Blue Spirulina shampoo and conditioner.

I like some of Annemarie Gianni’s products too - I love her herbal coconut skin oil - I use this for massage.

I love my neurophone by Patrick Flanagan. It’s a meditation device that sends you into a deep state of relaxation. I like Dr. Flanagan a LOT. He is an incredible human. And a great inventor.

In perfumes and scents you cannot beat Nectar by Ami. Ami is a friend of mine. She makes the purest botanical fragrances and they are literally mind blowing - you’ve never smelt anything like them before.

I love my rebounder.

I love orgonite for keeping EMFS neutralised.

I love Kejiwa’s atomisers and mists, they are the most ethereal I have ever smelled. I know the co-founder, Emma Claire Juniper and she is a special lady. They are truly making magic in this company. They have a perfume from a Sedona flower that is truly intoxicating as well.

A lot of people have family members that are going through health challenges, how do we support our love ones gracefully without being pushy.

  •  Lead by example
  •  Offer to make them food
  •  Suggest ONE change at at time, like hey why don’t you try celery juice, or why don’t you add B12 to your daily regimen? Download my Medical Medium STARTER kit for information on how to help yourself or a loved one get started on MM protocols. It’s completely FREE.
  •  Share stories about what people say about their healing from blogs and Social Media that you trust
  •  Show them documentaries, like Food Matters, Food inc. Cowspiracy, forks over knives, Genetic Roulette  - these can change minds without us needing to be pushy, the evidence is presented for itself
  • Show passion and enthusiasm, they will be inspired by it
  •  Have COMPASSION - they are going through a hard time too, it’s not easy watching others make changes when it feels really hard inside
  •  If they make fun of you, let it slide like water on grease. DON’T take their reactions personally. They are not about YOU. They are about them.

I was made fun of a few times when I first went organic. And some who know me will tell you I have a pretty sassy side. I put a can of insecticide on the table for those who did not want organic food anymore. I told them to just spray it on. I was never made fun of again.

Fesenjoon : Plant-based Walnut Pomegranate Stew

October 17, 2017

Recipe by: Sima Morrison

If you ask any Iranian, they will let you know their mom’s Persian food is the best. It actually is probably true according to them. Persian food is made with so much love and time. The best Persian food usually comes from a home kitchen rather than a restaurant experience.  These traditional dishes focus on fresh vegetables, herbs and spices.

The delicious stews can be made sans meat and still keep the intention of the dish. This dish in particular is a very traditional dish, which dates back to 3300 BC. This dish can be the main course or a sauce you can add to a protein. This tangy-sweet pomegranate-molasses dish has a vibrant amount of fresh spices that will make your mouth water. Every single ingredient used is very authentic to the Iranian culture and diet. Make sure all ingredients you purchase are organic and not genetically modified.

Fesenjoon

  • 2 cups of sprouted walnuts shredded in blender.
  • 1 large yellow onion, peeled and chopped.
  • 1 cup pomegranate molasses (recipe below)
  • ¼ coconut sugar or ½ cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • Pinch of cardamom
  • 2 tablespoon of Sunpotion Yin Formula
  • Add the desired amount of sea salt you enjoy to taste
  • 2 cups of water

1. Add coconut oil to a saucepan and add the shredded walnuts on a low heat.

2. Add the pomegranate molasses with the cardamom and 2 cups of fresh spring water. Let simmer for 30 minutes. Stir frequently.

3. In a medium pot add the oil with the onion and sauté. After stirring a few minutes add the turmeric to the mixture.

4. Add the pomegranate molasses to the medium sized pot.

5. Cover pot and make sure to have on low heat. Simmer for 2 hours and add water if the consistency is too thick.

6. Add the Yin Formula to the sauce and stir for a few minutes.

7. Serve on top of wild salmon or with basmati rice for a plant-based option.

Zereshk Polow : Basmati Rice with Barberries

  • 2 cups of sprouted basmati rice
  • ½ cup of barberries
  • 1 teaspoon of saffron mixed with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar or 3 tablespoons of honey
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil or grass fed butter
  • Big pinch of salt
  • 5 cups of water

1. Add 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to a medium sized saucepan. Add the barberries to the pan along with the saffron that has been liquefied with the coconut oil. Stir on low heat.

2. Add the coconut sugar to the pan and have a nice balance with the sweet and sour taste of the barberries.

3. In a large pot add the sprouted soaked rice and 5 cups of water to a boil for 12 minutes.

4. Once rice is cooked, drain rice in a colander and rinse with cool water a few times.

5. Rinse same pot and add 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil.

6. Empty rice into the pot and make a cone shape to let the steam of the rice out properly.  Made a few holes in the rice so it can release the steam.

7. Cook for 10 minutes on medium-high heat until it starts steaming. Add 3 tablespoons of water and coconut oil or grass-fed butter on top of the rice. Lower the heat and cover for 45 minutes.

8. Serve rice on platter and add the barberries and saffron from the saucepan on top of the rice.

9. Enjoy with love.

  • ½ cup of sugar or ½ cup of honey

A Day In The Life : Christine Surrago, ND

October 9, 2017

WAKING UP IS MAGICAL

Every morning I wake up just before the sun rises.  I take time to get acquainted with my body as if it is completely new.  It’s as if I am waking up straight from the womb with a fresh, pure body. I am grateful for the warmth of my skin and my heart. I am grateful to be human, full of life-force.  This time of day is special for me. This is the time of the day where I personally enjoy feeling my access to the abundance of pure, untapped, creative energy inside of me and all around me.  We all have a lot of accomplishments, strengths and skills that we have developed over our lifetime.  This is where many people often feel comfortable because they are operating out of their strengths.  However, we all have a wealth of untapped potential, creativity and life-force.  This untapped potential can be felt during your most relaxed and nourished states.

I TAKE CARE OF MY BODY

A lot has happened overnight.  Metabolic processes. Digestion. Healing.  Water is needed for many cellular and biochemical processes.  I drink pure, living water that I bottle myself at Mt. Shasta, one of the most potent healing vortexes on the planet located in Northern California. As the water nourishes the cells of my body, I feel more aliveness in every cell.  I then tune into my body and my day.  I’ll take herbs, do skin brushing, oil pulling, go for a walk if needed.  I then make sure I have 2-3 nourishing and balanced meals packed for a long work day.

READY FOR WORK

I spend most of my waking hours “at work.”  I will either be at my office treating patients or doing personal work.  In either scenario, whether I have the honor of being with a patient or the honor of being with myself, I have a special way that I prepare myself to go “to work” that day.  I like to begin by getting an honest baseline of where I am in my development as a person and as a doctor. It always starts with acknowledgement of all the work that I have done up until now.  I acknowledge that I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today, with the complex problems that I face, without my personal conviction for continual internal growth.  After fully acknowledging myself, I then naturally think of the issues that arise in my daily life.  I then choose one thing that feels like my next step to take for the day that will benefit my overall life.  I develop a goal for the day, which is usually one conscious discipline that I use that day to train myself to expand my skill sets and awareness.

CONSCIOUS WORK

Right before I step into my office, I remind myself of every unique job that I have given myself. First and foremost, I am responsible for my own energy and life.  I take care of Christine first and she is always being taken care of throughout the day.  I take full responsibility for my body, thoughts, feelings and actions.  I then expect others to take full responsibility for their body, thoughts, feelings and actions.  This is how to have an empowered team.  It is common for a lot of people to slip up from time to time and expect others to take responsibility for their feelings or actions, but this is something that I discipline myself to not go into agreement with because it leads to both parties being in a position of disempowerment, draining of vital life energy and ultimately resentment.  This never has a good outcome.  Then I acknowledge my other jobs and their responsibilities— Naturopathic Doctor, Business Owner, Office Manager, Accountant, Colleague, Research Scientist, Innovation Team and work diligently to perform them well.

THE END OF THE DAY

At the end of the day, I do my best to tie up loose ends and clean up from the day.  The last thing I want to do is go to bed with looming unfinished tasks.  I acknowledge myself for working hard, learning and being fully committed to my life. I take a few moments where I feel my appreciation for being exactly where I am, just as I am.  Goodnight!

A Day In The Life : Nitsa Citrine

September 25, 2017

Morning

Food: First, a giant glass of spring water.  Most mornings this is followed by a warm potion infused with tonic herbs, some white dragon matcha or chai, and a little raw honey blended up with some homemade sprouted nut or seed milk. ( I like to make my own nut milks because I try to avoid anything containing any form of preservatives, and prefer the creamy freshness of homemade versus store bought raw milks!) As a snack,  I love a giant spoonful of coconut yogurt from coconut cult - sprinkled with a little bee pollen and pine pollen - probiotic mineral rich, immune boosting gut-flora humming perfection!

Mindful exercises or rituals: First thing upon waking I take a moment to articulate my gratitude for all the blessings in my life. Love when I have time for morning yoga. My latest excitement is the 9am Kundalini class with Tej at Nine Treasures Yoga.  My friend Ise recently brought me to her class and I love it!

Other days may include the ritual of heading up to my roof for some self-guided pranayama, some simple stretches, jumping on my rebounder or just watering my plants....Almost everyday I take a few minutes to consciously enjoy a few rounds of tea, as a sort of meditation. I love these moments.

Products: Our White Dragon Matcha (from Sun Potion) and Yin Power.
Golda atmosphere mist - my friends Keiko and Tsugu offer this amazing woodsy spray made from Japanese Hiba wood which I mist myself (and anyone who happens to be around me) with all day long!
Poppy and Someday Marfa Moon Mist (for face)
Shiva Rose Beauty Balm
And then,  always love a good puerh - currently sipping Greg’s Galactivation Serum from Living Tea - which is amazing!

Routines: WORK. I feel grateful to work for myself and have the freedom of creating my work schedule. This being said, I tend to work constantly....I love it. Whether it is shooting photos, taking meetings, designing, strategizing, alchemizing….I like to stay busy, grounded and focused.
Unless I am out shooting, taking meetings or traveling, I tend to work best (from my home office) between 9 and 4pm….So you will often find me here during the day.

Afternoon

Food: Green juice, a chlorophyll rich salad, more tonics... love to snack on raw chocolate and fermented nut and seed cheeses, seasonal fruits, veggies!

Body work or workouts: Since my brain is most turned on in first part of the day, I tend to hit the gym or go for a hike around 4pm… I have my personal idiosyncrasy of a fitness routine that I follow...it used to be kind of a joke (I called it my 5 min workout) though I have been getting back into fitness and creating more time for it recently. Love how a range of exercise really enhances my overall energy levels, mood and mental clarity!
I love to warm up before yoga or a workout in my infrared sauna.

Night

Food: If I am cooking at home, I try to have an early dinner...this  generally consists of tons of vegetables (roasted or steamed or sautéed), some protein (some wild fish or if I am in a plant based zone - which happens often - more vegetables, sprouted grains, lentils, soups, kichari etc. I also love to cook for / with other people. Truth be told, I also love to go out and enjoy beautiful food with friends…organic, local, seasonal whole foods prepared with love, artistry  and intelligence...yum!

Mindful exercises or rituals: Gratitude. Pleasure. Joy.

Body work or workouts: Hmm… sleep prep?? Dancing! I have this funny muscle massage called “The Thumper” which is great for softening muscles + easing tension

Products: Poppy and Someday oil pulling, Sun Potion Shea Butter, Omica Sea Buckthorn Oil, Triphala, Tulsi Rose Tea, Evan Healy Immortelle Face Hydrosol

Routines: Love to run my aromatherapy diffuser (with lavender, rose, eucalyptus, peppermint and hiba oils) before falling into dreams...clears the respiratory system and energy from the day!

Herb of the Week: Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa)

September 12, 2017

By: Molly Helfend

Sacred herb of the Rain Forest. Life-giving vine of Peru. Uña de gato. These are all names used to describe the medicinal tropical vine known in western cultures as Cat's Claw. A member of the Rubiaceae family, Cat's Claw is a sacred plant traditionally used in Peruvian cultural medicine and more recently introduced into western herbalists’ armamentarium. Not much research has been done on this herb, but what has been found is astronomical. “Research has shown the plant contains immune stimulating alkaloids, which also enhance the parasympathetic nervous system” (Horne, 2010).

In simpler terms, it is an immune stimulating powerhouse that been proven to help eliminate free radicals that cause cellular damage. It curatively inhibits cancer growth and improves DNA repair. Some say, it works better than medicinal mushrooms! It is also used to relieve chronic pain and fantastic for curing intestinal inflammation and disorders. Because of its immunity enhancing properties, it is one of the “most sacred [herbs] among the Ashaninkas, Campo and other Amazonian tribes. According to indigenous Shamans, uña de gato serves as a bridge and balancer between the physical and spiritual worlds, which is helpful to health problems since they believe in spiritual causes of bad health” (Draxe, 2016). There is a certain supernatural ability and consciousness when ingesting this herb. What is also interesting, is that Cat's Claw looses its medicinal potency when absorbed directly through the tongue. Washing a tincture down with water or any other preparation with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar is key to allowing the magic to permeate into the jungle of your soma and soul.

Phytochemistry: Alkaloids, glycosides, procyanidins, saponins.

Herbal Actions: Adaptogenic, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antimutagenic immunostimulant,

How to Prepare: Tincture, tea, capsule, liquid extract, cream

What to Use For: Rheumatism, arthritis, inflammatory problems. cancerous cell formation, gastric ulcers, stomach and bowel disorders, colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut and bowel syndrome, gastritis, viral and fungal infections, Herpes, Candida.

Growing Conditions: Cultivated in Brazil, Peru and other Amazonian regions of South America, it requires more shade, which is why it is primarily managed in tropical rainforests. The trees themselves are typically 100 feet or higher.

Harvesting Methods: Because of the destructiveness to the tree organism, the root is not as commonly harvested. However, the inner bark is inexpensive and common amongst trade producers. Please leave the harvesting to the local indigenous farmers of South America. It is best to buy Cat's Claw from a local apothecary or sustainable and trusted fair-trade supplier.

Parts of Plant Used: Inner bark and root

Precautions: Very few side effects, but some people reported dizziness, nausea and diarrhea when taken in large amounts.

City Guide : Seattle

September 7, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

Home to fish markets, overcast weather and grunge rocker legends like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Seattle boasts an energetic culture that is far from “sleepless in Seattle.” Although I was not used to the damp temperatures, there was something natural and welcoming about arriving on a typical rainy day. Although this city is known for its booming tech industry with such internet moguls as Amazon and Microsoft, it felt more like a colorful fisherman's town. And when I say fish, I really do emphasize the deliciously high quality seafood I found. From fresh crab, lox and wild salmon, I was in heaven amongst a thriving food scene. Because of its laid back and low key energy, many people don't realize that this city is a hub of innovation and eclectic culture. It truly is a hotspot nuzzled into the Pacific Northwest clouds.

Restaurants

Matts in the Market

This typical Seattle restaurant is a simple choice. It’s a go-to amongst Pike Place natives, as it is right above the marketplace and boasts fantastic views of the city. Although it is located in a touristy area, you do not get that feeling with dining at this superb restaurant. With all local, seasonal produce and top notch seafood, this is a great rest stop while exploring the city.

94 Pike St #32, Seattle, WA 98101 | (206) 467-7909

2001 Westlake Ave, Seattle, WA 98121 | (206) 456-6300

Storyville Coffee

This is a very special coffee chain that deserves promotion, as 100% of its profits go to anti-human trafficking charities. On top of being philanthropic, their innovative menu is diet friendly and delicious! Try one of their organic homemade nut milks, flourless brownies or just grab a steaming cup of classic Seattle coffee. You will be uplifted by extremely high quality service and positive energy emanating from their grateful workers.

Marmite

Marmite is obscure with an esoteric, meat heavy menu. On those gloomy cold days, this is a great place to pop in for a warm and nourishing bone broth.

Gluten free. Vegan. Bakery. We found heaven! Fresh made desserts, bites, breads and more that are amazingly delicious - this place figured out the art of baking without gluten and dairy with no compromise.

3510 Fremont Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103

Mighty-O Donuts

This vegan donut shop places their donuts in so many Seattle coffee shops that you probably don't need to visit their Greenlake location (even though Greenlake is a neighborhood not to be missed). Boosting Libido

August 31, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

Let’s talk about sex. A subject that people are getting more and more comfortable with. Growing up in a conservative family the mention of the word sex was never in a conversation. Fortunately I was able to cut those conservative wirings and feel free to talk, share and educate on the topic of sexuality. Being open and free with sexuality and fluidity of your human form is so important to your overall health. Allowing yourself the gentle freedom to explore physical pleasures and passions is a beautiful part of life. It allows us to destress and connect fully to ourselves and our partners. Sex is actually extremely beneficial to our health, as orgasms activate serotonin. According to research, “a major projection of the dopamine neuron axon terminals is to the nucleus accumbens of the forebrain. This nucleus is activated during orgasm in women, as measured by fMRI” (Komisaruk et al., 2004).

However, environmental pollutants and chemicals, as well as preconceived societal norms and hormone disrupters prevent many of us from exploring what our libidos truly desire. Luckily, there are natural herbal products and activities you can add into your daily practices to enhance your sex drive and bring sensuality back into the bedroom. Do not be afraid to awaken your sexual appetite and presence.

Durian Fruit

On the exterior, one could mistake it for a jack fruit, however the interior looks like a gooey alien combined with an intensely strong smell of sulfur. Found in Thailand, Durian is known as the “King of Fruits,” as it is tradition for the wife to open this potent fruit for her husband to see, signaling her desire to be intimate, as it is an amazing aphrodisiac. Fun fact: if you open this foul smelling fruit on a train, you can get fined! Besides that, it is rich in vitamins, such as folic acid, B6 and vitamin A and C, and minerals such as zinc, iron, potassium and phosphorus, to name a few. It also contains essential nutrients such as protein and beneficial dietary fats. Check your local ethnic markets or online to find Durian.

Raw Revelations Gelatinized Maca

This Peruvian root is all the rage in the health scene right now for its hormonally balancing and energy enhancing properties. However, Maca is also fantastic for opening meridians and flows throughout the body and stimulating blood circulation in your reproductive systems. It is also terrific for keeping your stamina in bed! With its earthy taste, it goes great in your daily smoothies or pairs well with raw chocolate (another aphrodisiac). Raw Revelations sells the safest quality gelatinized Maca, meaning that the goitrogens, which mess with thyroid conditions, have been neutralized in the heating process.

Mountain Rose Herbs Damiana Leaf

Native to Central America, South America, the southwestern US, Mexico, and the Caribbean, this warm-tempered shrub is known for its bright yellow flowers, with its leaves traditionally enjoyed as an infused tea. With its soft, feminine energy, Damiana is the ultimate heart opening herb, essential for lubrication and supporting sexual vitality. Its erotic power is so strong that it also has been reported to intensify female orgasms, reverse impotence and actually have the same effects of viagra, without the harmful side effects. Our favorite online store, Mountain Rose Herbs, sells luscious certified organic Damiana.

Sun Potion Pine Pollen

Pine Pollen is the sexual fluid of pine trees, making it a potent aphrodisiac and libido booster. Because it contains testosterone and DHEA, it balances the ratio between sex hormones, androgen and estrogen and is extremely helpful in improving endocrine and immune system functions. Not only does it truly enhance sexual appetite, you can eat it right off the spoon, as it tastes THAT delicious. Our sister company Sun Potion sells high quality single origin, high-altitude, cracked cell wall Mason Pine Pollen, collected from Yunnan Province, China.

Ron Teeguarden’s Dragon Herbs Deer Antler Drops

Deer Antler acts as a sexual tonic that replenishes sexual vitality and anti-aging regeneration. It is also known for increasing sexual strength and fertility. And as a bonus, it is perfectly suitable for both men and women! Dragon Herbs humanely harvests antlers from deers that are farmed in Changbai Mountain, and are certified by the Chinese Ministry of Health to be clean and safe. This is the company we trust the most with our Deer Antler needs.

Planetary Herbals Horny Goat Weed

As ridiculous as the name sounds, Horny Goat Weed was actually named by farmers who noticed goats eating it and getting excited and sexually aroused around the opposite sex. It acts as a natural aphrodisiac, restoring circulation and supporting hormonal balance. It also may increase testosterone and treat erectile dysfunction. And, Planetary Herbals sells high quality Horny Goat Weed.

Mountain Rose Herbs Kava Kava Root

Kava Kava is a very well known herb, used from juice bars to a variety of relaxing and sedating herbal blends. It is packed with electrolytes and minerals, which increase libido with energy enhancing properties. It is so powerful it could even be used as a sports drink ingredient. AnimaMundi herbs is one of the most respected companies on the herbal market.

This tree is native to Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The root is used to raise testosterone levels, repair erectile dysfunction and decreased libido, while also possibly treating infertility. Apparently, it is said that Tongkat Ali is the closest nature has ever come to creating the perfect aphrodisiac. Make sure to buy root extract from Indonesia to get the highest quality and best sourced.

Jade eggs are becoming all the rage right now and for good reason. An old Chinese royalty tradition, queens and concubines would use this as their secret weapon to stay in shape for emperors. They are extremely receptive to crystal healing as well. It is also known to increase orgasms, tone vaginal muscles and balance hormonal and female energy. This is great to be used during sexual time with yourself. Goop sells high quality Jade Eggs.

Petal Passion Yoni Serum increases elasticity, tones tissue, and lubricates organs. Daily application of this organic elixir to your vulva area will soothe your love frequencies. It is made with organic infusions of such ingredients as jojoba, rose, ylang ylang, royal sandalwood and more. We love using it for a sensual massage.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga embraces sexuality by channeling sexual energy through the spine, where it is used for spiritual development. It is good for moving all of the energies in the body, which creates life through enjoyable sexual relations. Try doing yoga with your partner or even solo positions throughout the day to stimulate sexual desires. It will transcend your body to deep spiritual heights.

Foria Awaken Oil

Last, but certainly not least, we recommend using Foria Awaken cannabis-infused lube oil to stimulate your sensual delights. It contains THC and other cannabinoids, blended with coconut oil, to truly relax and awaken your body in a natural way. Although it will not boost your libido, it will enhance orgasms and make the sexual experience more powerful.

Deficiencies : Causes & Solutions

August 22, 2017

By: Molly Helfend

Have you ever woken up after a night of restless sleep and lusted for nothing more than a breakfast drizzled with maple syrup or powdered sugar? We have all had those days where we crave unhealthy foods. Those days when we turn into Augustus Glump and guzzle down chocolate bars whole or those days when we lick the entire inside of a potato chips bag clean of salt until it's gleaming like a shining penny. We all want to eat healthy, but what if I told you that it is not your lack of willpower or tenacity that is making you reach for these foods. Many times, it actually means you have a vitamin deficiency.

In this day and age of artificially processed foods, sugar-loaded beverages and genetically engineered produce and meats, most of us are lacking some of the most vital nutrients that keep our bodies nourished and strong. These genetically modified ingredients have not only a hazardous impact on human and animal health, but also have “unintended impacts on ecosystem health, such as unnatural gene flow, diminished genetic diversity, effects on non-target species, weediness, reduced pesticide and herbicide efficiency, herbicide and insecticide toxicity, and modification of soil and water chemistry and quality” (Tsatsakis, 2017). We live in a world where transnational corporate greed dictates how and what we consume, putting up a glass wall between consumer and producer. If you walk into your local market, it is almost impossible to find sustenance without pesticides, hydrogenated oils, antibiotics and refined sugars. “The food system—encompassing the production, processing, marketing, and purchase of food and the related consumer behaviors, resources and institutions—appears to be struggling to deliver nutritious and healthy diets in an equitable manner. And the world is changing: the global population is increasing, migration to cities is accelerating, and transitions in dietary habits towards more processed and animal-source based foods are becoming commonplace, putting the food system under ever-increasing pressure” (Dangour, Mace, Shankar, 2017).

And as we push further into a globalized society, we lose the connection and ability to control what is actually put on our shelves. This in turn is extremely harmful to our health and is seen in those ever expanding waste lines and health bills. This is when vitamin deficiencies can really take form. However, by cultivating connections and supporting our local farmers, growing your own garden or choosing real whole foods, you will see not only an improvement in your own health, but in your community’s as well. Taking the strain off of our industrialized food systems will honor the earth and continue our symbiotic relationship with the sacred lands that keep us alive.

1.png

Although what we ingest contributes to deficiencies, so does our lifestyle habits. This includes psychological, physical, social, environmental and even spiritual motives that inhibit our ability to take control of our nutritional health.  According to Authority Nutrition, some cues and habits include:

Suppressed thoughts: Viewing certain foods as “forbidden” or actively trying to suppress your desire to eat them often intensifies cravings for them.

Context associations: In some cases, the brain associates eating a food with a certain context, such as eating popcorn during a movie. This can create a craving for that specific food the next time the same context appears.

Specific mood: Food cravings may be triggered by specific moods. One example is “comfort foods,” which are often craved when wanting to get over a negative mood.

High stress levels: Stressed individuals often report experiencing more cravings than non-stressed individuals.

Insufficient sleep: Getting too little sleep may disrupt hormone levels, which may increase the likelihood of cravings.

Poor hydration: Drinking too little water or other liquids can promote hunger and cravings in some people.

Insufficient protein or fiber: Protein and fiber help you feel full. Eating too little of either may increase hunger and cravings.

Guilt-Free Cake Recipe!

August 17, 2017

By: Sima Morrison

Dreaming of a delicate summer dessert without the guilt of feeling too bloated to fit into your dresses or swimsuits? Then try our sugar, gluten, grain, dairy and unwholesome-free cake recipe to satisfy all your dessert cravings. We chose to use only the finest and gentlest ingredients to create this light and flavorful cake that tastes as elegantly beautiful as it looks. Our secret is: simplicity. From raw vanilla bean to coconut oil, the ingredients are clean and easy to throw together. We specifically use grain-free flours, such as coconut, to combat inflammation. Grains contain lectins, which bind the walls of our intestines and weaken our immune systems, which creates gut imbalances and digestive disorders. So in order to enjoy, we make our cakes with easily digestible grain-free flours, which are the perfect choice for any dietary restriction.

This cake recipe is also the perfect option for both vegans and omnivores alike. We chose to use both pasture raised eggs, as well as Neat Eggs which are an essential vegan alternative made out of chia seeds and garbanzo beans. Lakanto is a sugar-free monk fruit sweetener that adds that extra zest of flavor, while Vital Proteins ensures extra digestive support. Although we have chosen to use these simple whole food ingredients in our cake recipe, please be intuitive with what you want to put into yours. Mix around flours, sweeteners and adaptogenic herbs. Follow your own inner voice! One important tip is that if you are topping your cake with fruit, make sure you always choose seasonally available fruits. For example, summer figs, peaches, and berries and autumn apple and pears (try boiling these delicious earthly delights and drizzling your cake with honey and cinnamon).

Succulents are the perfect addition to your summer plant collection. Plants liven up spaces and connect us closer to nature, which is essential if you are living in a cityscape. Spiral Aloe succulents require full sunlight, are very hardy and their twisting helical shapes will add texture and pizzaz to any room! Make sure to support your local plant nursery or garden center when purchasing a plant.

10. The Sun

House of Citrine loves products that are not necessarily material. What we really love this August is a good helping of natural vitamin D, curtesy of the cosmic star we call the sun. This is a product no one has to pay for, as we are all blessed by the solar warmth and life it provides for earth. Its magnetic field helps us stay connected, especially with the intense solar eclipse energy surrounding us right now! Spending just 20 minutes a day basking in the light will provide countless health benefits.

A Day In The Life : Recipe Healer Bethany "lilsipper"

August 14, 2017

MORNING

My mornings usually consist of early gym workouts (really early! - like 4:30 / 5:00am) for about an hour. A mix of low impact cardio such as the stair-master or hill climbing on the treadmill and weight training. I love weights! In fact, weight training is a cardio workout in and of itself and it's sculpted my body like no other...not to mention it's revved up my metabolism to the max. However, not all mornings start with a workout and if I wake up and feel my body needs to rest, I rest. I don't ever plan on "rest days" but usually take them 2-3 times a week. Something many people fail to realize is that our bodies are broken down in the gym and build when we are in recovery mode (AKA: resting).

I normally don't eat anything before a workout since it makes my stomach cramp, but I do however consume a tsp of bee pollen - full of B vitamins for energy - and a spoon of raw coconut butter (also filled with healthy fats and immediate energy). I also prepare a large bottle filled with approximately 2 Tbsp of Fire Cider and the rest with room temperature water. I take that with me and have it waiting for me for when I finish my workout.

Coming home from the gym I take my dog Lucy out for a walk while I catch up on my emails, Instagram comments and DMs, etc. I know I should be enjoying the outdoors but there's just not enough time in the day to get everything done and keep up with what I have on my plate...one day I want to break that habit (hey, I'm not perfect!).

Once home, I eat some pureed meat (great for digestion and wonderful after a workout) and make some ghee and gelatin frothy coffee (a staple in my house) or matcha latte. Then again, trying to catch up on comments/DMs, emails all while meal prepping for the days ahead which varies depending on what I am "low on". My 1-ingredient coconut milk is usually on repeat as I try and make everything from scratch. There's nothing better than knowing what goes in your food and most importantly, what doesn't!

Mid morning I usually grab a snack like cultured cottage cheese and fruit, oatmeal (yes, that's a snack!), or a nutrition bar like the ones from Evo Hemp which I always have on hand - they're clean, pure, contain no junk whatsoever, and help with inflammation. If I am recipe testing that day, I usually "skip" my snack and just eat what I'm testing out.

AFTERNOON

Come the afternoon, I'm lucky if I have already showered! Thankfully I work from home so if I'm in my jams all day it's not an issue...running errands with knotted hair and PJs is becoming more popular and I like to think I had a part of that *wink. I try and tidy up the house and do the small, every day things that need to be done.

Smoothies are a staple in my days and I usually don't go a day without one! Sweet potato and cauliflower smoothies (yes, you heard me) have become an all time favorite and my Instagram followers have shown me their version so I know I'm not the only one who thinks these weird smoothies are flippin' bomb!

Afternoons also include another quick walk with Lucy, just to get out, move, and break up the day....then back to work.

EVENING

For dinner it can be anything from leftovers of what I created earlier that day, to a simple pasta, chicken, or my favorite air fried fries with my veggie avocado dip (so good!). And of course...tea! The Food Network is usually my "go-to" and sometimes just on in the background while I catch up on emails, social media, and go over the photos I photographed that day (I use a professional Nikon to take my pictures) while editing.

What products are my favorite? I have only a handful since I am VERY picky about what I put into my own body as well as recommend to others. There's so much crap put into "health foods" these days, that only a few items I have come across fit the bill. I have an entire page on my blog dedicated to all the top food products and kitchen gadgets I use and consume almost daily.

I'm always working, 7 days a week, 12-13 hours every day....but I love it! Yes, I get exhausted every day, but I feel so blessed to be able to share with others and help those in need with the information I put out and pass on. It gives me joy knowing that people are benefiting....from me! I would have never guessed that this would be my calling.
